Supreme Court of Iowa Strikes Down Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

Today, the Iowa Supreme Court handed down Varnum v. Brien:

In this case, we must decide if our state statute limiting civil marriage to a union between a man and a woman violates the Iowa Constitution . . . . On our review, we hold the Iowa marriage statute violates the equal protection clause of the Iowa Constitution.
This is a huge coup for civil liberties! Iowa now joins Connecticut and Massachusetts in permitting same-sex marriages. The opinion is here.
